In her early years, Boo Jhan worked in the logging industry in the mountains of Samoeng, Chiang Mai. When logging became illegal, she was forced into the tourism trade. Trained to carry tourists, she was fitted with a saddle and made to walk in repetitive cycles each day, often with little rest. She was later moved to Mae Taeng to continue the same work, where she spent years carrying visitors through the forest.
The constant handling, the use of hooks, and the weight of chains took a visible toll on her—painful marks of an all-too-common life for elephants in captivity. During her time in tourism, Boo Jhan gave birth to several calves, most of whom were taken from her and sold to other camps.
In 2016, Boo Jhan was rescued and brought to Journey to Freedom, where she finally found a place to rest and heal. She now lives among a true elephant family. She isn’t particularly fond of horses or cows, but when it comes to food, she’s not picky and enjoys a wide variety.
