2023 YOUth Empowerment Day @Stephens Middle School

COVID-19 has had a significant negative impact on middle schoolers in various ways, such as:

  • Disruption of Education
  • Social Isolation
  • Mental Health Issues
  • Limited Extracurricular Activities

The City of Long Beach Department of Public Health, and the County of Los Angeles Department of Mental Health have found that the pandemic has had a significant negative impact on the well-being and development of middle schoolers. The Westside of Long Beach has already been historically under-resourced and underserved in health and wellness resources. Our event will connect Stephens Middle School students to necessary resources to assist them as they navigate through this pivotal time in their young lives.

Overview
On behalf of Leadership Long Beach, our team is looking to produce and host a day event at Stephens Middle School for students and their families, at no cost to the school or attendees. The event will feature resources and exhibitors focused on health and wellness in addition to empowering families for success as they prepare to transition to high school.

Goals

  • Utilize school campus to provide students and families connections to a wide variety of accessible local, community-based resources as they relate to health and wellness, with a holistic approach
  • Demystify mental health and introduce self-care practices
  • Celebrate and empower students and families to share their successes as they prepare to transition to high school

Activity & Session Examples

  • Arts & Music
  • Affirmation Stations
  • Self-Defense 101
  • Scavenger Hunt, Opportunity Drawing & Prizes
