About the Speaker:
Tawny Hammond is a nationally recognized leader in animal services with over 30 years of public service experience and a strong focus on building high-performing teams and sustainable systems. She spent more than 25 years in municipal government, where she led the Fairfax County Animal Shelter to a 90% save rate by transforming policy, culture, and community engagement.

As Chief of Animal Services in Austin, Texas, Tawny helped guide the city to a 98% save rate—one of the highest in the country—by focusing on innovation, transparency, and strategic leadership. Her approach centers on empowering staff, aligning mission with operations, and treating animal services as an essential part of good government.

Now serving as National Advisor of No Kill Advancement at Best Friends Animal Society, Tawny mentors leaders across the country, writes and speaks on the future of animal services, and advocates for a compassionate, professionalized field that reflects the values of the communities it serves.
