Justin is Funraise's CEO, a co-founder, and a bad-ass, experienced nonprofit fundraiser. Like a true fundraiser-turned-founder, he breaks down the concepts behind Funraise's mission everywhere he can make nonprofits' voices heard.

I spent twelve years building and growing two nonprofits.

The pain I experienced with the technology I used was the same on the first day as it was on my last. I never thought I would start a technology company, but given my experience raising tens of millions online and knowing the nuances of operating nonprofits, it felt right.

There were three problems I set out to solve:

  • Streamlining data. Way too many nonprofits don't have a holistic picture of who their donors are and how they have been involved. This is a big reason why donors churn.
  • Improving the donor experience. So many nonprofits make it hard to give online. They collect too much information and their donation pages feel like a time warp back to the dial-up days. This is why your donors don't give online.
  • Making omnichannel fundraising possible with one platform. Today's donors are multi-channel and it doesn't make sense to use three different platforms to engage with them. This is why donors don't feel known.

I believe that vertical technology is what allows organizations to grow. So much of what exists today wasn't built for nonprofits; instead, it was an afterthought.

Your technology should enable growth, not prevent it.

We took a look at the landscape of philanthropy. We look at, you know, what exists out there. There's lots of tools. There's lots of technology that can be used. But what we noticed was that it was very fragmented. There was most nonprofits were using three or four or five different pieces of software. And what we wanted to do is we wanted to bring all those things together. And one platform that would allow you to run, you know, your operations as an organization and to be able to fundraise across multiple channel channels. So it's not just about one single fundraising tactic. It's an omnichannel approach. So the technology is expansive in that sense where it allows organizations, gives them the tools in their tool belt to reach new markets and allow them to experiment in pretty cost-effective ways.
