What is your donor retention rate?

Recently, I asked this question to a handful of CEOs running midsize nonprofits, and most thought they were retaining 90%+ of their donors each year.

When I asked if they could verify that with data from their CRM or fundraising platform, everyone said "Yes", but no one knew how or where to find the data.

The reality was that most of these nonprofits were trending just above the national average, which is just below 50%.

You heard that right. On average in 2022, nonprofits retained fewer than 50% of their donors each year (AFP). This means that you have to acquire a TON of new donors just to remain flat.

This is a BIG problem. In fact, I would call this an emergency.
